BURTON — Burton Parks and Recreation Commission passed a plan for improvements, to be made in the next five years, Feb. 8.

“I am extremely excited at the five year plan. I really believe this brings to the table a clear vision of growth for the City of Burton,” said Stacy Betts, commission member.

The plan includes multiple improvements, officials said.

“We did a survey with the city and the biggest thing the community wanted to see was more hiking trails, walking trails and I believe there are about two miles behind VG’s,” said Councilman Steven Heffner.

Improvements to Kelly Lake bathroom facilities are also included in the plan.

“The grants we are seeking this time is for Kelly Lake,” said Heffner.

Other plans are for a community water park.

“I want to see a splash pad,” said Councilman Danny Wells. “Maybe put it in by city hall.”

With a five year plan in place, getting funding will be the next step, said officials.

“At our March 5 meeting, we are going to ask the council to approve different funding, different grants,” said Heffner.

City council has pledged up to 25 percent of funding for the projects outlined in the plan.

“I think it’s a vital part of our community,” said Wells. “I’d like to see the plan expanded. It will keep the kids off the street and bring the crime rate down.”
