Bentley dedicates game to young leukemia sufferer

Photo by Jason Gatica BURTON — The Lady Bulldogs have played in some close games recently, until they met up with the Genesee Area Conference’s top girls’ basketball program at Flint Hamady on Tuesday. The Bulldogs would be no match for the Hawks, as Hamady claimed a 79-16 win. Bentley trailed by just eight after the opening stanza, until Hamady exploded for a 32-2 run in the second quarter. The Bulldogs were then outscored, 29-4, in the final frame.

Courtney Cuddie topped all Lady Bulldogs with six points, one steal and one block. Danielle Lidstrand tossed in five points to accompany her four rebounds, one steal and one assist. Heather McDaniel picked up two points and two rebounds, while Jada Harris scored two points, snatched down three rebounds, and recorded a block and an assist. Miranda Boulton contributed with one point, eight boards, one block and one assist.

Last Thursday, the girls donned pink and dedicated their game against Genesee to second grader Allie See of Barhite Elementary, recently diagnosed with leukemia. Allie was presented with a pink basketball and gift bag courtesy of the Bentley girls and coaches.

Bentley will be back on the hardwood on Thursday at Byron. -- B.P.

ATHERTON

A trip to Dryden was successful for the Lady Wolverines, as they returned home with a 48-23 victory on Tuesday.

Atherton jumped out to an 11-3 lead after one quarter and stretched the lead to 21-10 at halftime.

The second half was no better for the Cardinals, as they were outscored, 14- 11, in the third and, 13-2, in the fourth.

Brittany Kuzmich led Atherton with 14 points, Sara Gammons had 13 points, five assists and four rebounds, Kylie Wilson came through with 13 points, eight assists, three steals and three rebounds and Kayla Shepard added two points and 10 boards.

The Lady Wolveirnes hosted Byron last Thursday and pulled away for a 44- 28 victory. Atherton jumped out to an early 14-3 lead and extended the halftime lead to 27-12.

The third quarter saw the Lady Wolverines with a slight edge, 13-12, and the fourth quarter had each team score four points.

Wilson led the way with 12 points, six assists and four rebounds, Gammons came through with 11 points, five assists and four rebounds, Kuzmich added eight points, five steals and two boards and Shepard chipped in six points and eight rebounds.

Atherton, 8-10 overall, 7-7 GAC, travels to Bendle today and hosts Dryden on Feb. 24 to end the regular season. — E.H.

BENDLE

The Lady Tigers were anything but kind when Byron paid them a visit on Tuesday, blazing out to leads of 15-3 and 23-11 at the end of the first and second quarters, before finally posting a 45-20 victory.

With Bendle also outscoring the Lady Eagles, 9-4, in the third and, 12-5, in the fourth, Jacqueline Simpson proved invaluable with 17 points, seven blocks, six rebounds, three assist and three steals and coming through with 14 points on 8-of-9 free-throw shooting was Emily Malin.

The Lady Tigers, 11-7 overall, 10-6 GAC-Blue, host Atherton today. — M.S. FAITH

The Lady Lions split a pair of road games with area teams last week, beating Michigan School for the Deaf, 34- 18, last Thursday before losing to Burton rival Genesee Christian, 42-27, on Friday.

At Genesee Christian, Angelina Drago had 15 points, but Faith didn’t have enough firepower to stay with the Lady Soldiers.

At MSD, Drago had 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Sarah Sienkiewicz had 11 points and 10 steals for Faith. The Lady Lions eased out to a 5-3 lead in the first quarter, but then started to pull away with a 13-5 second period. A 14-4 third quarter made it 32-12 heading into the final eight minutes.

Faith will visit St. Thomas More tonight. — D.N.

GENESEE CHRISTIAN

The Lady Soldiers easily won their showdown with Burton rival Faith High last Friday, 42-27, at home. Jessica Cherry scored 18 points, Patty Badour added eight and Emily Sauer tallied seven, as 10 Lady Soldiers played and six got into the scoring column. Genesee Christian limited Faith scoring leader Angelina Drago to 15 points, about seven below her average.

The Lady Soldiers will host Troy Bethany Christian next Tuesday. — D.N.
