Mountain Cats lose third straight
FARMINGTON — The Michigan Mountain Cats of the NA3HL may have a roster that features players from all across Lapeer and Genesee County, but that didn’t keep the team from going scoreless this past weekend with losses of 2-0 and 3-0 last Saturday and Friday on their home ice against the Metro Jets.
Last Saturday, it was Metro’s Mike MacKinnon who opened the scoring at 11:08 of the first period on assists by Steve Klisz and Jake Schlact. Teammate Doug Andrews followed shorthanded at 17:27 of the second on the Matt Stirling pass to round out the scoring.
Defensively, things weren’t nearly as subdued as Schuyler Ferguson stopped 51 of the 53 shots he faced on the night to take the loss in net for Michigan despite his team’s five infractions for 10 penalty minutes. Metro goalie Dillon Kelly cast aside all 40 of the shots Michigan sent his way and the Jets had four penalties for eight minutes in the box.
The action wasn’t nearly as fierce last Friday, as the Mountain Cats outshot the Jets, 27-25, and goaltender Jordan Wood was able to make 22 saves on 24 attempts, yet Michigan still fell once again after first period goals by the Jets Matt Stemkoski at 4:05 and Stirling at 8:15.
With 152 goals allowed this season in 39 games, the Mountain Cats, 13-25-1-5, are at Metro on Sunday prior to hosting the Cleveland Junior Lumberjacks on Monday and playing the Flint Junior Generals at Iceland Arena on Tuesday. — M.S.

Michigan Warriors get edged out on road
TRAVERSE CITY— The Michigan Warriors of the North American Hockey League traveled into unfriendly territory to take on the Traverse City North Stars last Friday and were able to keep the game knotted at 2-2 and 3-3 at the end of the first and second periods. That’s as close as the Warriors would get, though, after Traverse City scored twice in the third to bring home the 5-3 victory. Posting goals for Michigan were AJ White, Martin Gruse and Joseph Ferriss and between the pipes Brach Tiller knocked down 30 of the 34 shots sent his way to get pinned with the loss.
The tides took a much different turn last Saturday, as the Warriors were able to get the better of Jamestown, 4-1, despite being outshot, 34-31, and falling behind, 1-0, in the second. The difference in the contest was Michigan’s four-goal run that started at 12:34 and 19:21 of the second off the stick of Robert Mantha and was sandwiched around Ferriss’ score at 13:49. It wasn’t until 3:43 of the third that Michael Economos added the final goal for the Warriors to go with netminder Trevor Gersuch’s 33 saves.
Michigan, 17-25-5-1, hosts St. Louis on Friday and Saturday and Spingfield on Feb. 24-25. — M.S.
